The role of local government in the provision of facilities to support elite sport pathways

In December 2018, Wyndham City and Western Melbourne Group (WMG) were successful in securing one of two new A-League licenses.  Following the successful bid for a licence, Western United Football Club was established and Council and WMG entered into an agreement to develop Wyndham Stadium Precinct at 1160 Sayers Road North.

The partnership is backed with strategic planning work identified in the Wyndham Sports Strategy 2045 and broader open space planning and land acquisition undertaken since 2010.  This vision has seen the establishment of three key regional open space facilities across Wyndham to ensure Wyndham’s network of Regional Sporting Facilities creates the greatest social and economic impact for the municipality and region.

This presentation will outline the Council’s strategic planning of regional sport and its alignment with the unique opportunity to partner with Western Melbourne Group and Western United FC towards Wyndham Stadium.  It will identify the planning, social and economic benefits and opportunities to Wyndham; the importance of a partnership approach to investment and pathway development; and importantly how the west has embraced the Club who made the A League finals in their inaugural season; and now witnessing the inspiration and pride the partnership is having on the communities of Wyndham and the broader Western Region.
